80 Cents of Profit on Every Dollar: SK Hynix’s AI Chip Windfall

SK Hynix will return about $75 billion to shareholders after a quarter with an 80% operating margin. Here's why US investors should care.

Imagine keeping about 80 cents of operating profit from every dollar you sell. SK Hynix, the memory-chip maker Nvidia leans on, did exactly that last quarter, and it now plans to return about 100 trillion won (roughly $75 billion) to shareholders for fiscal 2026.

That is a margin most businesses never see, and it came from selling memory chips for AI data centers. (Your local coffee shop would like a word, and probably a lie-down.)

The announcement landed Oct. 28 alongside record third-quarter results, according to Reuters. It is a week old, so here is what matters now and what comes next. The headline number is the SK Hynix shareholder returns plan, and the details are worth a close look.

Why SK Hynix Investor Returns Matter to Your Portfolio

Here’s the thing: SK Hynix is a key supplier of the high-bandwidth memory that powers Nvidia’s AI hardware. It also lists shares in the US under the ticker SKHY, according to Seeking Alpha. If your 401(k) holds tech or AI funds, this is the kind of company that can move them.

Investors listen when it says demand is sold out for years. They are also watching a shaky market, as our look at what the Nasdaq slide means for your 401(k) shows.

The Numbers Behind the $75 Billion

Revenue topped 100 trillion won in a single quarter for the first time. It reached 104.6 trillion won, up 328% from a year earlier, per Quartz. Operating profit hit 83.3 trillion won, up 632% year over year.

The margin was about 80%, according to Yahoo Finance. That is roughly $62 billion in profit from three months of work.

The payout plan splits two ways. Cash dividends will top 30 trillion won. Buybacks and share cancellations will top 60 trillion won.

That total includes the 40 trillion won buyback announced in August, per Reuters. Part of the dividend is a special one tied to gains on the company’s Kioxia investment.

Sold Out Through 2029

The company says buyers have snapped up its DRAM and HBM chips through 2029. It also expects the shortage to last through 2030, according to Reuters.

SK Hynix has long-term agreements with 14 major customers. Those deals cover more than half of its 2027 and 2028 capacity, per The Standard. That visibility is what lets the company promise a big SK Hynix payout without flinching.

So who feels the squeeze? Anyone who buys devices or servers that need memory, since a sold-out supply chain tends to keep prices firm.

Not Everything Was a Win

Net profit came in at 39.8 trillion won. Analysts expected 61.4 trillion won, according to the Wall Street Journal as cited by Quartz. That is a big miss, and it comes from non-operating costs.

Those include an 11.6 trillion won currency loss and 22.9 trillion won of investment-valuation losses, per Yahoo Finance.

The shares had also slid about 20% in October on AI-bubble worries before the report, according to Yahoo Finance. If that fear sounds familiar, Broadcom’s CEO warning about a casino mood in AI investing hit the same nerve.

The stock then jumped roughly 8% to 11% on Oct. 28, depending on the outlet. The Korea Times framed the payout as a way to close the gap between a sluggish share price and record earnings.

What Happens Next for SK Hynix Buyback and Dividend Plans

Details are still thin. I could not find the dividend schedule, the special dividend’s size or the payment dates. Treat any per-share number you see online with caution.

The company will keep buying back and cancelling shares through 2026. It is also talking with customers about extending its typical five-year contracts.

Capital spending will rise significantly next year, per Reuters. Bigger factories are a theme elsewhere too, like the $45 billion chip plant eyed for Sherman, Texas.

The next test is the fourth quarter. Analysts expect operating profit of about 87 trillion won, according to TrendForce. If SK Hynix hits that number, the real question becomes who else wants a seat at this table.
