Nvidia Reflection AI Talks: Chip Giant Weighs Buying Open-Model Startup

Nvidia is reportedly in early talks to buy or deepen its stake in open-model startup Reflection AI. Nothing is confirmed, and the $25B figure is a funding valuation.

Nvidia is reportedly weighing a bigger stake in, or a purchase of, open-model startup Reflection AI.

The Nvidia Reflection AI talks could turn one of the world’s most valuable chipmakers into a direct owner of a frontier open-weight model lab. Nvidia is in early talks to deepen its investment in Reflection AI or buy the startup outright, the Financial Times reported Saturday, citing people with direct knowledge.

Neither company has confirmed it. Reflection declined to comment, and Nvidia did not immediately respond to Reuters, which relayed the FT report. So treat this as a report, not a done deal.

What the Nvidia Reflection AI talks could look like

The discussions are at an early stage, and the structure is still unsettled. Reported options include an acqui-hire, where Nvidia would bring on Reflection’s staff and license its technology. Others include a larger equity stake, or supplying more chips and compute. An agreement could come within weeks, per the report. The talks could also fall apart.

Nvidia is not a stranger here. It has already put $800 million into Reflection, according to the FT. That makes the chip giant both an investor and, in this business, a supplier. Circular? A little. That is exactly the kind of arrangement regulators like to ask questions about.

Who is Reflection AI, and what would an acquisition change?

Reflection was founded in 2024 by former DeepMind researchers Misha Laskin and Ioannis Antonoglou. The company builds tools that automate software development. It has also positioned itself as a U.S. open-weight alternative to Chinese labs such as DeepSeek, according to earlier reporting on its funding.

Its valuation has moved fast. Reflection was valued at roughly $545 million in March 2025. It reached $8 billion that October after a $2 billion round that included Nvidia, according to Wikipedia’s company entry. In March, the Wall Street Journal reported it was in talks to raise $2.5 billion at a $25 billion pre-money valuation, per Reuters via Yahoo Finance.

Here is the catch. That $25 billion is the startup’s funding-round valuation. It is not a reported purchase price. No price, terms or structure have been reported for a Reflection AI acquisition, so any headline pairing “acquire” with “$25 billion” is stitching two different facts together.

Why this matters beyond one startup

The timing is notable. Reflection introduced Beam, its first open-weight model, about five days before the report. It says it will release the model’s weights later in October, according to Runtime Wire. Reflection says Beam performs on par with Z.ai’s GLM-5.2, but no independent evaluation backs that up yet.

Nvidia also makes its own open-weight models under the Nemotron name. A Nvidia Reflection AI deal would give it a direct stake in a frontier-scale model effort, not just the hardware underneath one. Meanwhile, analysts have flagged possible antitrust scrutiny given Nvidia’s market position. That is commentary, not a reported regulatory action.

The politics are also heating up. Washington is leaning hard into the sector, as our coverage of the Trump AI task force shows. Big Tech is pouring money in too, including the $2.4 billion in Genesis Mission AI pledges from tech giants.

For everyday readers, the stakes are simple. The company that sells the picks and shovels in the AI gold rush may be about to buy a mine. If open models end up tied to one chip supplier, that shapes who gets to build AI, and what it costs.

So what happens next? An announcement could land within weeks, or the talks could quietly die. Watch for statements from Nvidia or Reflection, the Beam weights release later this month, and any regulatory filings if a deal is struck. For now, it is a very expensive maybe.
