Michael Dell Lost About $36 Billion in Two Days and Slipped Two Spots on the Rich List

Dell stock fell about 11% Wednesday and another 9% Thursday, knocking Michael Dell from fourth to sixth on Forbes' billionaire list.

Imagine watching your fortune drop faster than a laptop off a dorm-room desk. Michael Dell net worth took a beating this week, and the Dell Technologies founder has tumbled from the fourth-richest person on Earth to sixth after his company’s stock lost roughly a fifth of its value in two ugly sessions.

The short version: a Barclays downgrade and a broad tech selloff hit Dell shares on Wednesday and again on Thursday. Forbes’ real-time ranking did the rest.

How Michael Dell’s net worth fell so fast

It started Wednesday, October 14. Before the open, Barclays analyst Tim Long cut Dell Technologies from overweight to equal-weight. Shares were down 11.1% shortly before the close, the biggest intraday drop since July, according to Forbes’ reporting on Yahoo Finance. The Seoul Economic Daily has the stock closing down 11.27%.

App how-to story

Dell owns about 40% of the company, so that drop landed squarely on his fortune. Forbes estimated he lost more than $20 billion on Wednesday alone. That left him at $256.6 billion and pushed him behind Google co-founder Sergey Brin.

Thursday was no kinder. By 10:30 a.m. Eastern, shares were down more than 9% at $462.88, Forbes reported. Dell was down about $15.2 billion on the day, with a net worth of $241.2 billion. That slid him past Mark Zuckerberg, who sat at $250.7 billion.

That $36 billion figure, explained

You’ll see “$36 billion in two days” in the headlines. Here’s the catch.

It’s a rough sum of Wednesday’s drop of more than $20 billion and Thursday’s morning loss of about $15 to $16 billion. It is not a clean closing-to-closing number, so Michael Dell net worth will look slightly different once the books settle.

The stock also clawed back a bit later Thursday. TrendSpider had it down about 7.4% to roughly $470, per its market report. So the final two-day total will land somewhat lower than the headline number. Still, nobody is holding a bake sale.

Why the Dell billionaire ranking keeps shifting

This is a real-time estimate, and it moves with every tick of the stock. Less than $10 billion separated Dell, Brin and Zuckerberg on Wednesday. At this level of wealth, that’s a rounding error, and it can flip back in a single session.

Rankings also depend on who is counting. The “fourth richest” label comes from Forbes’ real-time list, while Bloomberg’s index has shown Dell in a different spot at times. Either way, the Dell billionaire ranking is a moving target.

Why Dell stock is sliding

The reasons pile up. The wider market sold off after a hotter-than-expected September inflation report. Fears of more rate hikes are in the air, and 30-year yields sit near 19-year highs.

There is also worry about AI spending, the very thing that made Dell’s fortune. Silver Lake entities and some Dell executives have been selling shares too, per TrendSpider.

Dell shares are now down nearly 20% from their October 9 closing peak of $586.

Here’s the thing: Dell’s fortune works like a live readout of how much the market believes in AI spending. When that confidence wobbles, the richest people on the list feel it first, and anyone whose portfolio leans on the same story is watching right along with them.

Zoom out and the ride is wild. Dell’s fortune jumped more than $157 billion from $97.7 billion on the 2025 Forbes 400, powered by demand for AI servers and data centers. Last month Forbes had him near $270 billion, briefly second only to Elon Musk. Tech’s biggest names are riding the same AI wave, as the National Medal of Science honors for Musk, Huang, Brin and Su show.

He has been here before. In May 2024, Dell lost $11.7 billion in a single day when shares fell 18% on disappointing server sales, as Bloomberg reported. He bounced back then, too.

What to watch next for Michael Dell’s fortune

No scheduled catalyst has turned up. So the real question is simple: does Dell stock steady on Friday, or does the AI-spending jitters story keep rolling?

With Dell, Zuckerberg and Brin packed within about $10 to $20 billion of each other, the leaderboard could reshuffle again before the weekend.

Dell’s wealth is also in motion off the trading floor. The couple recently pledged money to help families claim Trump Accounts, a reminder that the paper losses haven’t slowed his giving. Big stock swings are nothing new, either. Just ask Nike, now being dropped from the S&P 100 after its own long slide.

For a guy who just lost more than the GDP of some small countries, he’s still sitting on roughly $240 billion. Rough week, sure, but nobody is starting a fundraiser.
