HBO Hides a New Hogwarts in Harry Potter’s Glasses, Premiere Dec. 25

HBO's first Harry Potter series poster hides a redesigned Hogwarts in Harry's glasses, and the Dec. 25 premiere is closing in.

Somewhere in a pair of round glasses, there’s a castle. The first official poster for HBO’s Harry Potter series is out, and the new Harry Potter series poster shows a redesigned Hogwarts reflected in Harry’s lenses, a first look at the castle fans have been waiting to see.

The image appeared on the official Harry Potter Instagram account on Oct. 29, according to Yahoo Entertainment. Rotten Tomatoes reposted it, and then the internet did what the internet does. (I’ll admit it: I stared at a pair of glasses for longer than I’d like to confess.)

What the Harry Potter series poster actually shows

It is a tight close-up of Harry, played by newcomer Dominic McLaughlin. Hogwarts glows in the reflection of his glasses. The tagline reads “The Boy Who Lived,” and the artwork also carries the “New Series Dec 25” date, as Wizarding World Direct describes it.

Outlets including TVLine call it the first look at the show’s redesigned Hogwarts exterior. The caption on the post was just as short: “Everyone in our world will know his name.”

Why the Harry Potter HBO poster is a big swing

Netflix-sized expectations are riding on this one. HBO is rebooting a franchise millions of people already know by heart, and it is doing it on Christmas Day.

That date is no accident. Families will be home, screens will be on, and nostalgia will be doing a lot of heavy lifting.

Here’s the thing: Dec. 25 is already crowded with plans, and HBO is betting there’s room on your couch for Hogwarts. In the media business, big franchises carry big stakes. Warner Bros. is at the center of a bidding war, as our coverage of Paramount’s $111 billion offer for the studio shows. A hit here matters more than ever.

So the poster has a job. It has to say “this is the Hogwarts you remember” and “this is something new” at the same time. Putting the castle in Harry’s glasses is a clever way to do both without showing too much.

What we know about the series behind the poster

Season 1 is titled “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” and has eight episodes, per Warner Bros. Discovery. It premieres Dec. 25, 2026, on HBO, with streaming on HBO Max. For more on where that streaming service is headed, see our look at Netflix’s proposed deal for Warner Bros. and HBO Max.

Francesca Gardiner is the showrunner, and Mark Mylod directs multiple episodes, according to J.K. Rowling’s official site. The cast named in coverage includes Alastair Stout as Ron, John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Snape and Nick Frost as Hagrid. HBO chief Casey Bloys has promised “a faithful adaptation.”

The plan is one book per season, which means the series could run at least seven seasons. However, HBO has not said whether episodes will drop all at once or weekly.

What to watch after the Harry Potter TV poster

Expect more marketing between now and Christmas. That part is my guess, not an announcement. For now, the Harry Potter series poster is the clearest sign yet that HBO wants this to feel like a big event.

The real question is the one every fan is already asking: can a new Hogwarts feel like home by Dec. 25?
