The Canelo Álvarez fight against WBC super-middleweight champion Christian Mbilli is still on for Riyadh on Saturday, Oct. 31, says Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh. The card streams live on DAZN, but the date now sits under a cloud after deadly attacks on the city’s airport.
What Alalshikh Said About the Canelo Álvarez Fight
Alalshikh posted on X on Sunday, Oct. 11, that Canelo reached out and told him he will still fight in Riyadh this October, according to Box.Live. In his words, “no matter what happens.” He added three more words: “He fears nothing.”
Here is the important caveat. Every word of that comes from Alalshikh. We found no statement from Canelo himself, from Mbilli’s team, or from DAZN or the WBC.
As of Oct. 12, officials have announced no venue or date change for the Canelo Riyadh fight. Alalshikh’s statement also did not address travel or contingency plans.
What Happened at the Riyadh Airport
The trouble started Saturday, Oct. 10. Saudi authorities said an attack on King Khalid International Airport killed at least 12 people and injured 309, and the Houthis claimed responsibility, Post Wrestling reported. A second strike hit Terminal 4 the next day, causing new injuries and a fire, per ABC Noticias.
The casualty numbers are not settled. Some outlets report 13 dead, and one reports at least 18 killed across four attacks. Nobody has published an official tally, so treat every figure as preliminary.
The attacks come amid renewed fighting between Saudi-backed forces and Yemen’s Houthi movement. This is not the first time the region’s conflict has touched Saudi sports. An F1 statement reported by Diario de Cuyo says the Bahrain and Saudi Grands Prix did not take place in April because of the Middle East situation. Our search turned up that article undated, so check the date before leaning on it.
The attacks hang over the Canelo Mbilli bout, and fans are asking whether the card survives them.
Canelo vs. Mbilli: The Details
So what is actually on the books? Canelo (63-3-2, 39 KOs) will challenge Mbilli (29-0-1, 24 KOs) for the WBC title, Boxing Insider reported. Note the word challenge. Some outlets say Canelo is defending a belt, and that is wrong. Mbilli is the champion, and this is his first title defense.
Mbilli won the interim WBC belt with a first-round knockout of Maciej Sulecki in June 2025. The WBC elevated him to full champion on Jan. 27 after Terence Crawford vacated following his retirement. The official undercard release, reprinted by Yardbarker, bills the card as “Mexico vs The World.”
When Does the Canelo Title Fight Start?
This is the question most people searching for the fight want answered, and the honest answer is that it is not fully nailed down yet. Alalshikh said the main fight starts at 3 AM, which would be Riyadh time. Boxing Insider says that lands in the early evening on the U.S. East Coast. By our own conversion, 3 AM in Riyadh on Oct. 31 works out to about 8 PM ET on Oct. 30.
It is also unclear whether 3 AM refers to the ring walk or the start of the card. Check DAZN’s official listing before you plan your night. We did not find a U.S. price or a final broadcast schedule, so we are not going to guess at one. If you are filling the weekend with other sports, our college football Week 6 picks can help.
Why This Fight Matters So Much to Canelo
Canelo is 36 and a former two-time undisputed super-middleweight champion. This is his first fight since a unanimous-decision loss to Crawford in September 2025. He also had elbow surgery early this year, and Boxing News Online calls this one a must-win.
The fight was originally set for Sept. 12, then slipped after a family matter delayed the start of his training camp. Now a bout that already moved once faces a far bigger question mark.
The timing has drawn criticism too. The undercard reveal came on Thursday, Oct. 8, the same day as one of the airport attacks, and some in boxing did not like the optics. That makes the Canelo Álvarez fight a story far beyond the ring.
What to Watch Next for the Canelo Álvarez Fight
Here is the thing: confidence from the promoter is not the same as a green light from everyone involved. If you have tickets, travel plans or a watch party in the works, the details could still shift. Watch for statements from the WBC, DAZN, Mbilli’s team and Saudi authorities. Watch for any change of venue or date, for travel advisories, and for the status of the airport itself.
The venue is also unclear. Most outlets say The Venue, while one says ANB Arena. And boxing is not the only event on the line, since WWE Crown Jewel follows in Riyadh exactly one week later, on Nov. 7. Elsewhere in sports, the College Football Playoff bracket has its own developments.
For now, the date stands. After the week Riyadh just had, the question is whether it holds all the way to Oct. 31.
