12 Months of Pay to Quit Google? Only Swiss Staff With 12 Years Get It

Google confirmed paid exit offers in five countries that began in June. The viral 12-month pay claim only applies to Switzerland.

Google's voluntary exit program with severance now reaches five countries.

Only Swiss Googlers with 12 years on the job get the full 12 months’ pay to leave. That’s the catch behind the viral “up to 12 months’ salary to quit” posts. The company confirmed to Reuters that its voluntary exit program with severance now covers select workers in five countries: Canada, France, Germany, Japan and Switzerland. It began in June.

The bigger point is the direction of travel. Big tech is shifting from pink slips to paid exits, and the money is going to AI. If you work in tech, expect more quiet offers like this one, not fewer. Google’s AI push is reaching into classrooms too, as we covered when Google told schools that turning off student AI means losing Search.

What Google confirmed about its voluntary exit program

A Google spokesperson told Reuters that “in 2025, some of our teams introduced a voluntary exit program with severance.” The spokesperson added that “this past summer, in June, we expanded this program globally in a few countries to support our important work ahead.” Fox Business carried the quote.

So the US and UK divisions got their programs first, in 2025. The five new countries came this summer. The story went public on Nov. 4 because Reuters reported it, not because Google just launched something new.

The offer is also not open to everyone. A Google spokesperson said the program is limited, and Google Cloud and DeepMind were left out of earlier offers.

The Swiss numbers: where Google severance offers hit 12 months

The only terms anyone has reported are from Switzerland. They come from people familiar with the matter, not from Google. People Matters reports that the package pays one month of salary for every year of service, capped at 12 months.

In other words, a 12-month payout takes 12 years on the job. A newer hire gets far less.

Nobody has reported the terms for Canada, France, Germany or Japan, so treat any bigger promise with caution.

The Swiss timeline is clear, though. Google announced the packages in mid-June and told applicants of its decisions by mid-July. The first people who accepted began leaving in August. Zurich is a major engineering hub, with about 5,000 Google employees in the country.

Why Google would rather pay people to leave

The Google voluntary buyout program fits a bigger pattern. Alphabet is cutting costs while its AI spending runs hot. That spending has weighed on the stock, as Yahoo Finance reported. Meanwhile, the company keeps prioritizing hiring in AI and cloud. The same AI anxiety is rattling investors more broadly, as our look at the AI panic that sent the Nasdaq into a correction shows.

A buyout is also quieter than a layoff. Google cut more than 200 jobs in Switzerland in 2023, which set off employee protests and strikes. Asking people to volunteer avoids that kind of fight.

It doesn’t always replace layoffs, though. In at least one division, Google followed voluntary offers with layoffs.

Google paid exits and the Microsoft comparison

Every new country on the list is outside the US. No American Googler suddenly got a new offer this week.

Microsoft is running a similar play at a much bigger scale. Its offer, announced Oct. 26, covers about 60,000 eligible employees across selected teams in the US, Canada, India and the UK. Calcalist reports that employees at level 67 and below can get up to 39 weeks of base pay. They also keep stock vesting and health insurance.

Google’s program began months before Microsoft’s, so this is a shared trend, not a coordinated move.

What we still don’t know about the Google exit program

Google hasn’t said how many employees are eligible or how many said yes. One person familiar with the matter said at least four people from a single team of about 50 took the offer. That’s an anecdote, not a headcount.

Microsoft workers have until early December to decide, and those who accept leave at year-end. Google hasn’t announced any new rounds.
