Paramount and Warner Bros. Will Become Skydance as David Ellison Puts His Name on Hollywood’s Newest Giant

The combined Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery company is expected to operate under the Skydance corporate name.
The combined Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery company is expected to operate under the Skydance corporate name.

One of the biggest entertainment mergers in Hollywood history is getting a surprisingly simple name.

David Ellison announced Friday that the company created by the combination of Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery will operate under the Skydance name once the transaction closes.

Instead of creating an entirely new corporate identity — or attempting to squeeze Paramount and Warner Bros. into one enormous name — Ellison is taking the brand he founded nearly two decades ago and placing it above one of the most formidable collections of entertainment assets in the world.

The combined company is expected to officially become Skydance Corporation, with its Class B shares moving to the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker SKYD when the transaction closes, currently expected on October 6.

Paramount and Warner Bros. Aren’t Disappearing

Despite the corporate name change, moviegoers should not expect the Paramount mountain or Warner Bros. shield to suddenly disappear.

Ellison says the intention is exactly the opposite.

Paramount and Warner Bros. are expected to continue operating as recognizable studio and consumer-facing brands, while Skydance becomes the umbrella corporate identity sitting above them.

Ellison said the company wanted to preserve what made both studios distinctive rather than create a corporate brand that overshadowed either one.

That means audiences could continue seeing familiar names including Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros., HBO, HBO Max, CBS, CNN, Nickelodeon, DC and Paramount+, while the larger organization behind those properties carries the Skydance name.

A Small Hollywood Studio Becomes the Name Above Two Giants

The symbolism is difficult to miss.

Ellison founded Skydance as a relatively young production company and built it through partnerships on major franchises including Mission: Impossible and Top Gun.

Skydance then completed its combination with Paramount in 2025, creating Paramount Skydance.

Now, roughly a year later, the Skydance name is preparing to sit above both Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery.

It effectively transforms Ellison’s original studio brand from a production-company identity into the corporate name behind more than a century of Hollywood history.

Paramount traces its roots back more than 100 years, while Warner Bros. has been one of the defining names in filmmaking since the 1920s.

Ellison framed the decision as a way of creating one corporate identity without erasing those histories.

“Together, we are Skydance,” Ellison wrote while describing the company as a creative-first home built around premium storytelling.

The Scale of the New Skydance Is Enormous

The roughly $110 billion transaction brings together two major Hollywood ecosystems.

Under one corporate umbrella will sit film studios, television networks, streaming platforms, news organizations, sports rights and some of entertainment’s most valuable franchises.

The portfolio includes Paramount and Warner Bros. film operations alongside HBO, CBS, CNN, Nickelodeon, DC and major streaming businesses Paramount+ and HBO Max.

That gives the new Skydance extraordinary reach across theatrical movies, television, streaming, sports, news and intellectual property.

It also gives management an enormous integration challenge.

The company is targeting approximately $6 billion in cost savings, while Reuters reports the combined business is expected to carry roughly $80 billion in debt.

David Ellison Won’t Be Running It Alone

Ellison will remain chairman and CEO of the combined company, but he is bringing in another major entertainment executive to help operate it.

Former Mattel chairman and CEO Ynon Kreiz has been appointed co-CEO and is scheduled to join Paramount on October 5, one day before the anticipated transaction closing.

Under the planned leadership structure, Ellison will concentrate on areas including long-term strategy, creative direction, technology, partnerships and capital allocation.

Kreiz will focus heavily on day-to-day management and the integration of the businesses.

Kreiz led Mattel through a strategy centered on transforming its intellectual property into broader entertainment franchises, most visibly through the enormous success of Barbie.

That experience could prove particularly relevant inside a company suddenly responsible for an immense catalog of globally recognized characters and franchises.

The Deal Has Already Faced Major Resistance

Getting to this point has not been simple.

The Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery transaction faced antitrust challenges from 12 states as well as opposition from the Writers Guild of America.

A federal judge approved a settlement clearing one of the final obstacles to the transaction, paving the way for the expected October 6 closing.

The settlement includes commitments related to U.S. film production, theatrical releases, worker support and editorial independence involving CBS and CNN.

Critics of the merger have argued that combining two enormous media companies could further concentrate control within an already consolidated entertainment industry. Supporters of the transaction have emphasized the potential scale, technology investment and financial resources available to the combined company.

Why the Skydance Name Matters

Corporate rebrands happen constantly.

This one carries considerably more weight.

Paramount and Warner Bros. are two of Hollywood’s most recognizable names. Instead of choosing one over the other, Ellison is effectively placing both underneath the company he started.

Skydance therefore becomes more than a production label.

It becomes the corporate identity for an entertainment empire spanning movies, streaming, television, news, sports and some of the most recognizable intellectual property in popular culture.

And importantly, the strategy appears designed to keep the historic brands visible.

The mountain can remain Paramount.

The shield can remain Warner Bros.

But the company controlling the increasingly massive operation behind them will simply be called:

Skydance.

THIS! Take

The most interesting part of this announcement may not be that another giant media company is changing its name.

It is which name survived.

Paramount has more than a century of Hollywood history. Warner Bros. has more than a century of its own.

Yet the corporate banner above both will belong to the comparatively young studio David Ellison created.

That says plenty about where the power has shifted.

Now comes the much harder part: proving that combining some of Hollywood’s most famous brands can create something stronger than the individual companies that came before it.
