Toyota Recalls 31,000 RAV4 Plug-In Hybrids That Can Lose Power at Higher Speeds, and the Fix Is Just Software

Toyota is recalling 30,978 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrids because a software error can shut down the system at higher speeds. The fix is free.

Picture cruising at highway speed when your plug-in hybrid decides to clock out. The Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid recall covers 30,978 U.S. vehicles that could lose power while you’re driving, and the culprit is a software glitch, not a broken part.

The recall applies to 2026 model-year RAV4 Plug-in Hybrids, according to the NHTSA notice reported by Fox Business. Toyota’s own recall announcement, dated Oct. 7, rounds the number to about 31,000.

What Goes Wrong in the Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid Recall

The trouble sits in an electronic control unit, the small computer that manages the hybrid system. Toyota says an error in that unit can shut the system down while the vehicle is moving. The federal notice puts it this way: the unit “may encounter an error, causing the plug-in-hybrid system to reduce power or shut down when driven at higher speeds.”

That matters most on the highway. The same notice warns that “an unexpected powertrain shutdown can cause a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.”

One trade outlet, AutoGuide, adds a detail on the cause. It describes a communication fault in the motor generator control unit. A software error during startup triggers it under specific conditions. That level of detail comes from one source, so treat it as reported, not confirmed by Toyota.

Why the RAV4 Software Recall Is a Software Fix

Here’s the good news hiding in a scary recall headline. Nobody is tearing out a battery or swapping an engine. Dealers will update the control unit’s software at no cost to owners.

That should make the repair quick compared with a hardware recall. Sitting around waiting for parts is the usual recall misery, and this one mostly skips it.

The sources found so far report no crashes or injuries tied to the defect. That’s worth saying plainly, because “loss of drive power” sounds scarier than the record shows.

Here’s the thing: if you own one of these, the fix costs you nothing but an afternoon. Ignoring the letter is the only way this gets expensive.

When Owners Will Hear About the 2026 RAV4 Recall

Don’t stand at the mailbox just yet. NHTSA says owner letters are expected to start going out Nov. 22. Toyota says it will notify owners by early December 2026.

Not the Only Toyota Recall This Month

If your head is spinning, you’re not alone. Toyota announced a separate and much larger Land Cruiser recall on the same day. It covers about 106,000 vehicles over a fuel tube that could disconnect and leak. Different vehicles, different problem. Check which one is yours.

The company has had a busy recall year. It pulled about 508,000 Camrys in August over a display that can go blank at startup. In March, 550,007 Highlanders came back over second-row seat-back locking. In May came roughly 43,000 Tundras over engine debris.

Recalls are a normal part of selling millions of vehicles, and the system works best when owners actually respond. Toyota’s hybrids are also big sellers, as our look at the best-selling EVs in the US shows. And with the federal credit gone, hybrids are winning buyers who once looked at pure EVs. For plug-in hybrid shoppers, this Toyota plug-in hybrid recall is a reminder that modern cars are rolling computers, and computers need updates.

So the real question for RAV4 owners: how long until that letter lands, and will you have already booked the dealer visit?
