U.S. Mint Puts a Kid Golfer on a 2027 Quarter, One of 20 Coins

Your pocket change is about to get a golf lesson. The U.

Your pocket change is about to get a golf lesson. The U.S. Mint just unveiled a golf quarter for 2027, part of a new Youth Sports Coin Collection announced on Oct. 26, 2026.

Here’s the part I love: the golfer on the coin isn’t a legend with a green jacket. Instead, according to CoinWeek, it’s a young player finishing a swing against a background inspired by golf-ball texture.

The Mint’s tagline for the design? “Short Stature, Long Drive.” Not bad for a coin.

What the golf quarter and the 2027 set include

Golf is one of five sports honored in the first year. The Mint says the 2027 quarters also cover baseball, soccer, softball and snowboarding. Each year brings five new designs, so the full program adds up to 20 quarters from 2027 through 2030.

Every one of them shares the same front side: a new George Washington portrait in civilian attire, shown at a three-quarter angle, per the Mint’s media kit. So Washington stays put while the sports rotate on the back. (Steadiest gig in American money.)

Beyond the youth sports quarter: the half dollars

The program also brings four Paralympic Sports half dollars, one a year from 2027 to 2030. The 2027 half dollar carries a new JFK portrait on the front. Its reverse honors Paralympic wheelchair basketball, according to CoinNews. Add it up and the series totals 24 coins.

Congress set this in motion. The Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 authorized the program. Meanwhile, the Mint also asked the public for input in early 2025, with a survey of 58 candidate sports.

Fifty-eight candidates, and five made the first cut. Tough room.

Why the 2027 golf quarter matters to golf fans

Here’s the thing: coins like this reach people who never watch a Sunday round. A kid who finds a golf quarter in the car cupholder just got a free ad for the sport. And a young swinger on the design tells you exactly who the Mint wants to reach.

Golf’s money is already making headlines, as Scottie Scheffler’s climb to the PGA Tour’s all-time money list shows.

Mint Director Paul Hollis framed the program around values, saying, “Participation in sports teaches teamwork, perseverance, and the value of working toward a common goal.”

Collectors have plenty to track, too. The program follows the 2022 to 2025 American Women Quarters Program, and 2026 quarters celebrate the semiquincentennial. If youth sports are your thing, our look at the bill that could reshape college sports covers the other end of the pipeline.

What we don’t know about the golf coin yet

Don’t start digging through couch cushions just yet. The Mint’s page lists the golf and soccer designs as available in 2027, but exact release dates, mintage numbers and pricing haven’t been announced.

The sports for 2028 through 2030 are also on the Mint’s press release and media kit pages, but only the 2027 lineup is confirmed here. For another look at what 2027 holds, see Tesla’s wild 2027 lineup.

The real question is whether anyone will actually spend a golf quarter once it lands in their hands. My guess: not a chance.
