Georgia-Florida Is Now the Gridiron Classic, and Fans Are Furious

Georgia-Florida is being sold as the Invesco QQQ Atlanta Gridiron Classic, and fans of both teams are furious. Here's what's confirmed.

Georgia and Florida meet in Atlanta on Oct. 31 for the first time in the rivalry's history.

Picture the world’s most famous tailgate being renamed by someone who bills by the quarter. The Georgia-Florida Cocktail Party name fight is the story of game week, and it has nothing to do with football. Fans have called this rivalry the “World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party” for decades. Now sponsors are selling it as the “Invesco QQQ Atlanta Gridiron Classic,” and both fan bases are not having it.

I’ll say it plainly: nothing says college football tradition like a name that sounds like a mutual fund prospectus.

What the Georgia-Florida Cocktail Party name change actually is

Here is what we can confirm. The Mercedes-Benz Stadium event page lists the game as the “Invesco QQQ Atlanta Gridiron Classic: University of Georgia vs. University of Florida,” set for Saturday, Oct. 31. Gates open at 2 p.m., and the game starts at 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC.

The Gridiron Classic is a sponsored annual series at the stadium. It started last year with Georgia Tech hosting Georgia on Black Friday. This year, Georgia plays host to Florida, according to FBSchedules.

One detail is worth flagging, because a viral Instagram post is making the rounds. It claims the game will officially carry the title “Invesco QQQ Atlanta Gridiron Classic – Cocktail Party Edition.” However, we found no official source using that suffix. The stadium, Georgia Athletics and the news outlets all use the Gridiron Classic name alone.

Treat “Cocktail Party Edition” as the poster’s own joke until someone official says otherwise.

Why fans are so angry about the Georgia-Florida rivalry rebrand

It’s not just a name. This game has spent three decades in Jacksonville, and this year it is on the road. Georgia and Florida swapped Jacksonville for Atlanta in 2026 because of renovations at EverBank Stadium. Tampa is next in 2027, per Yahoo Sports.

Fans were already adjusting to a new city and a roof over the party. Then came the corporate branding.

One fan summed up the mood on social media, as The Spun reported: “We may argue whether it’s the Florida – Georgia Game or the Georgia – Florida Game, but we all agree that it’s the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party.”

Here’s the thing, though. Hail Florida Hail reports that the series stopped officially using the Cocktail Party moniker 20 years ago, after school officials worried about promoting excessive drinking. So the nickname lives on in the stands, not on any official poster. Fans kept it alive themselves, and that is exactly why a sponsor’s name feels like an intrusion.

To be fair, the backlash comes from social media comments and opinion pieces, not a poll. Still, when fans of both schools agree on something, you notice.

Georgia fans are already juggling plenty this season, from Georgia’s climb to No. 1 in the AP poll to the Outkast jersey release, and now the Georgia-Florida Cocktail Party has a sponsor too.

What’s actually on the field

The football is the part nobody is arguing about. Per Georgia Athletics, No. 3 Georgia is 6-1 (4-1 SEC) and Florida is 5-2 (3-2 SEC). Both teams are coming off an open date.

Georgia is the designated home team and the two-time defending SEC champion. It’s also the Bulldogs’ first time playing Florida in Atlanta. ESPN Analytics has Georgia as a heavy favorite.

Meanwhile, the retractable roof will be closed for the game, so the “outdoor” part of the old nickname takes a hit too. For more Georgia lore, see our look at Mark Richt’s spot among the SEC legends.

Is the name coming back after this year? Nobody official has said. The Gridiron Classic is a sponsored series, and the schedule lists Georgia-Florida only in 2026, with the 2027 game in Tampa.

Saturday’s winner gets bragging rights. The loser at least gets to blame the sponsor.
