Ford’s $28,350 Fathom Truck Already Has a Waiting List for the Waiting List

Ford's $28,350 Fathom electric truck now has a sign-up list, but real pre-orders don't open until early 2027.

Ford says the Fathom starts at $28,350 and pre-orders open in early 2027.

Ford has invented a line for the line. The Ford Fathom electric pickup now has a sign-up list, even though real pre-orders do not open until early 2027. Car and Driver noticed the absurdity first, and honestly, so did we.

Here’s what is solid. Ford says the Fathom is its new midsize electric truck and the first vehicle built on its Universal EV Platform. It starts at $28,350 with the standard-range battery. Ford’s own Fathom page says it plainly: “Pre-orders begin early 2027.” For the full backstory on the name, see our look at Ford’s $30,000 electric pickup finally getting a name.

What the Ford Fathom list actually is

The Car and Driver headline describes a pre-order list for the pre-order list. (Yes, really.) I could not open that article, so I can’t tell you exactly which list it means. Several dealers are collecting names, and that is the part we can confirm.

Several dealers are running interest lists for the truck. They say joining places no order and takes no deposit. One Minnesota dealer page states that official pre-orders are “not open yet.” So the list is a hand-raise, not a purchase.

The Ford Fathom price, and the fine print

That $28,350 figure excludes the $1,595 destination charge, according to Ford Authority. Add it and the sticker lands at $29,945. Still under $30,000, which is the whole point of this truck.

It matters because affordable EVs have been scarce. Most electric trucks on sale today cost far more. A sub-$30K Ford is a very different pitch.

Buyers shopping the used market have noticed too, as demand for used F-150 Lightnings has surged since Ford killed that truck.

Here’s the thing: you can’t buy the Fathom truck yet

If you’re budgeting for one, the number to remember is $29,945, not $28,350. And the truck itself is still a long way off. Ford says production happens at its Louisville Assembly Plant in 2027. A post on the Mach-E owners’ forum from an account labeled Ford Motor Company says deliveries start in fall 2027. That source is only semi-official, so treat the date as a target.

Range, battery size, towing and payload numbers are also missing. Ford is expected to share them at a full reveal in early 2027. That means anyone joining a list today is signing up for a truck whose specs they have not seen.

One more wrinkle: the headline calls it a 2028 Ford Fathom, while Ford’s own pages point to a 2027 launch. The model-year label is unsettled, so don’t be surprised if it shifts.

Ford has told us a few things so far. The Fathom will have a 15.4-inch touchscreen and bidirectional power. It will also offer next-generation BlueCruise driver assistance, and Ford says its passenger space should beat the Toyota RAV4. Those are promises on a web page, not test results.

The slip also tells a story. Ford executive Andrew Frick previously said orders would open “later this year.” That has now moved to early 2027. Reservation lists are the cheapest way to keep buyers warm while the calendar slides.

So who is this list for? Mostly the curious, and maybe the patient. If a cheap electric Ford truck is on your radar, go ahead and sign up.

Just bring a snack: you are queueing for a queue, and the real line forms next year.
