Jay-Z vs. the NFL: From Turning Down the Stage to Headlining It

Jay-Z will headline the Super Bowl LXI halftime show on Feb. 14, 2027.

Picture running the hiring process for years, then finally hiring yourself. Jay-Z will headline the Super Bowl LXI halftime show on Feb. 14, 2027, and the guy who has spent years choosing everyone else just chose the best act left on the board. The NFL, Apple Music and Roc Nation made it official during Monday Night Football, according to ESPN.

The announcement dropped at halftime of the Cowboys-Eagles game on Oct. 26. The Super Bowl is at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, Rolling Stone reports. It lands on Valentine’s Day, so plan your dinner reservations around the second quarter. Like the biggest celebrity event of the year, this one will dominate the conversation for months.

Why the Jay-Z Super Bowl headline is a big deal

This will be Jay-Z’s first time performing in a Super Bowl halftime show. That sounds wrong for a man with his résumé, and it is a little wrong, because he has been in the room for years.

Roc Nation has co-produced the halftime show with the NFL since signing an agreement in 2019, and the two sides renewed the deal in 2024. In plain English: Jay-Z’s company helps pick the headliner. Deadline, Hola and Yahoo Sports all note that he effectively selected himself. Puck News first reported that on Oct. 20, before the league confirmed anything.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says that was the plan all along. “When we first reached an agreement with Roc Nation to produce the show, I had just one request: that Jay-Z take the stage himself one day, whenever the moment felt right to him,” Goodell said in a statement.

Jay-Z called it “a journey.” “From Reasonable Doubt to standing on the Super Bowl Halftime stage, this has been a journey,” he said.

The history behind the Jay-Z halftime show

Here’s the thing: this is a very different Jay-Z than the one who once turned the stage down. He has said the NFL asked him to bring out Kanye West and Rihanna, and he called passing a matter of principle. Lady Gaga performed that year instead.

The 2019 NFL partnership also drew heat, with critics calling it a money move that let the league off the hook after the Colin Kaepernick saga. That argument isn’t going away just because the setlist is great.

Still, the timing is hard to beat. Jay-Z just wrapped his JAŸ-Z30 tour at SoFi Stadium, the very building he will headline in February. The tour marked 30 years of Reasonable Doubt and 25 years of The Blueprint.

What we don’t know yet

The NFL has not announced any guest performers, a setlist or a show length. Beyoncé guest speculation is already everywhere, but no source confirms it. Treat it as a rumor until someone with a badge says otherwise.

To be fair, the internet isn’t pulling this out of thin air. Beyoncé headlined Super Bowl XLVII and was a guest at Super Bowl 50.

Puck also reported that the NFL considered Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber. Fox’s OutKick adds Harry Styles to that list, but that part rests on one outlet’s reporting.

The Jay-Z Super Bowl set follows Rihanna (2023), Usher (2024), Kendrick Lamar (2025) and Bad Bunny (2026). That is a tough lineup to top. It’s also a long way from the last time SoFi hosted this game, in 2022, when Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, Kendrick Lamar and 50 Cent shared the stage.

How to watch the Super Bowl 2027 halftime show

The game airs on ESPN, ABC and Disney+, with mobile streaming on NFL+, according to Yahoo. Apple Music bills it as the Apple Music Super Bowl LXI Halftime Show, so expect Apple to be everywhere. No pricing or ticket details have come out.

Sports media is shifting fast, as the story of J.J. Watt taking over CBS’s top booth shows.

So the real question for the next 111 days: who walks out with him? Jay-Z has had a decade of practice keeping everyone guessing, and he is not about to stop now.
