Nvidia Lost $835 Billion in October, Yet Retook the Crown. Here’s Why

Nvidia closed Election Day at $4.99 trillion, about $150 billion ahead of Apple.

Nvidia's $4.99 trillion market value edged past Apple's $4.84 trillion at Tuesday's close.

Apple’s turn at the top lasted about as long as a long weekend. Nvidia is the world’s most valuable company again, retaking the title from Apple at Tuesday’s Election Day close, according to 24/7 Wall St. Just days earlier, we covered how Apple briefly took the crown at $5.03 trillion.

Here are the numbers. Nvidia finished at a market value of about $4.99 trillion. Apple slipped to $4.84 trillion.

That is a gap of roughly $150 billion, and yes, it’s the kind of rounding error most of us would love to have.

How the Nvidia most valuable company crown flipped back

Apple had passed Nvidia at Friday’s close, $5.03 trillion to $4.93 trillion, Tweaktown reported. It didn’t hold. Nvidia shares rose 2.3% on Tuesday to close at $206.69, while Apple fell 1.9% to $331.90.

So why the swing? Chip stocks bounced back after a steep sell-off the day before, and the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.83%. Media coverage tied Nvidia’s move to the sector, not to any Nvidia-specific news.

Apple’s slide followed its earnings. The company posted a record $114.5 billion in quarterly revenue, up 12%. But it guided to a gross margin of 45% to 46% for the December quarter, below what analysts expected, per Gotrade.

CEO John Ternus called memory pricing “unprecedented.” In plain English: the parts inside your next gadget are getting pricier, and that squeezes profit even on a record quarter (the corporate version of winning the game and still griping about the parking).

The number that explains the world’s biggest company

Here’s the fun one. Nvidia lost about $835 billion in market value in October alone, Forbes reported. That is more than three times the roughly $250 billion gap that briefly put Apple on top.

Put another way, the chipmaker lost a monthly fortune and still got the crown back within days. Its growth explains why.

Nvidia’s revenue was $27 billion in fiscal 2023, but it reached $215.9 billion in fiscal 2026. Its data center business alone made $89 billion last quarter, about 92% of the company’s sales. Demand there is also global: China’s giants ordered more Nvidia cards than the company can build.

What the largest company by market value means for you

Here’s the thing: if you own an index fund or have a 401(k), you almost certainly own a slice of both companies. Two stocks worth nearly $10 trillion between them move the whole market. When they swap places, it’s usually a sign of where investors think the next dollar of safety, or growth, is hiding.

Worth saying plainly: “biggest” here means market value only, not sales or profit. And rankings like this can flip in a single afternoon. In fact, Nvidia was trading down about 1% in early Wednesday pre-market action, so the lead is thinner than it looks.

What happens next for the top market cap

The next big test is Nov. 17, when Nvidia reports fiscal third-quarter earnings after the close. The company has guided to revenue of about $108 billion, give or take 2%. Apple, for its part, has told investors to expect high-single-digit revenue growth next quarter.

Even so, any wobble in AI spending could reshuffle the leaderboard again, as the recent sell-off in China’s AI stocks showed.

Nvidia has traded the top spot with Apple several times this year, including a brief Apple lead on July 27. Don’t bet your lunch money on who wears the crown by Thanksgiving.
