A major champion just got traded for draft picks, and TGL now has a transaction wire. Boston Common Golf acquired 2019 Open champion Shane Lowry from The Bay Golf Club on Monday. It was the TGL first trade, and in fact the first deal in the league’s short history, according to coverage of the TGL announcement on PGA Tour’s site.
Lowry, 39, of County Offaly, Ireland, is not your average name on a trade sheet. He won the 2019 Open Championship at Royal Portrush by six strokes, and he took the 2015 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational before that. He also hit the first tee shot in TGL history, in The Bay’s 9-2 win over New York Golf Club on Jan. 7, 2025.

So yes, the league’s first trade involves the guy who literally started the league’s first match.
What The Bay got in the Shane Lowry trade
The Bay receives Boston’s fourth pick in the upcoming roster-formation process, which works like the TGL draft. It also gets what CBS Sports calls “commercial considerations.” (Corporate for “there’s more in the envelope, and we’re not saying what.”)
However, the sweetener is where the reporting splits. Golf Digest, citing Sports Business Journal, says the package includes one additional pick over the next three seasons. CBS describes it as the right to swap one future selection with Boston in the next three offseasons. Same spirit, different fine print. The league’s own release will settle it.
Why Boston wanted him
Boston already had the league’s most famous captain in Rory McIlroy, who co-founded TGL. Now it also has his Ryder Cup running mate. McIlroy and Lowry were teammates on the European side that won on American soil in 2025. (McIlroy is no stranger to big travel plans, as we noted when he flew to India to chase a Colin Montgomerie record.)
McIlroy made it sound like a reunion. “Shane is a great friend and someone I love having alongside me in team competition,” he said. Lowry returned the favor in a statement: “Having Rory alongside me and being part of this group makes it particularly exciting.” Boston president Mark Lev said the team was thrilled to make the first trade in TGL history “with a player of his caliber.”
Here’s the thing: this is not a desperate move. Boston finished atop the 2026 regular-season standings, then lost in the semifinals to Jupiter Links. Los Angeles Golf Club went on to win the title, beating Jupiter Links 2-0 in the final on March 24. The Bay, meanwhile, missed the 2026 playoffs, as did New York. As a result, one team is stacking talent while the other is stockpiling picks.
The roster puzzle after this TGL blockbuster trade
TGL rosters grow from four players to five this season, which changes the math. Boston’s 2026 group was McIlroy, Keegan Bradley, Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama. Whether the other three return is not confirmed, but with five spots all three technically could. Boston says its full roster is coming shortly.
The trade also lands as the league grows. Motor City Golf Club, TGL’s first expansion team, is the seventh franchise, and Brooks Koepka was its first drafted player. Elsewhere in golf, fans are also tracking whether Tiger Woods can make another Masters return.
The bigger question is whether this is a one-off or the start of a real trade market. Now that a major champion has been moved for picks and consideration, every team with an unhappy star or a spare first-rounder will be picking up the phone.
