She dangles off aircraft for a living, yet Rebecca Ferguson won’t step into an elevator. She turns 43 today, and if you have watched a Tom Cruise movie or a spice-planet epic in the last decade, you have seen her work.

Today is also one of the more dramatic dates on the calendar, so grab coffee. Here is the October 19 rundown.

October 19 birthdays: who is celebrating today

  • Rebecca Ferguson, 43: The Swedish actress who plays Lady Jessica in Dune and agent Ilsa Faust in Mission: Impossible.
  • Gillian Jacobs, 44: The American actress, known to a lot of us from TV comedy.
  • Thundercat, 42: The American musician and producer, still one of the coolest bass players around.
  • Lil Durk, 34: The Grammy-winning Chicago rapper, who was acquitted at trial last month.
  • Hunter King, 33: The American actress.
  • Benjamin Salisbury, 46: The actor and dancer.
  • José Bautista, 46: The Dominican baseball player.

Rebecca Ferguson: the one nobody saw coming

Ferguson was born on October 19, 1983, in Stockholm. She started acting at 15 in a Swedish soap opera. Her big break then arrived with the British drama The White Queen, where she played Elizabeth Woodville and earned a Golden Globe nomination.

Here is the part I love: Tom Cruise handpicked her for Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation after watching her in that series. She went on to play Ilsa Faust in three films of the franchise. In fact, Fallout alone grossed over $790 million worldwide.

She then moved to a different kind of epic. As Lady Jessica in Dune and Dune: Part Two, she won a Saturn Award. Today she also stars in, and executive produces, Apple TV+’s Silo.

One more fun fact: she is claustrophobic and refuses to ride elevators.

A woman who dangles off aircraft in the movies takes the stairs in real life. That tracks, somehow.

Born on October 19 and the history that came with it

1987: Black Monday, an October 19 history lesson

Nobody forgets this one on Wall Street. On October 19, 1987, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 508 points, or 22.6 percent. That remains the largest one-day percentage drop in its history.

The crash started overseas and rolled into New York. It still comes up every time the market has a bad week, so it matters to your retirement account today.

Recent selloffs, like the one that wiped $1 trillion from AI stocks in four days, bring the comparison right back. So do Michael Burry’s warnings about a narrow market.

2005: Hurricane Wilma sets a record

On this date, Hurricane Wilma became the most intense Atlantic hurricane on record. Its minimum pressure hit 882 mbar, with winds near 185 mph.

The National Hurricane Center called its jump from a tropical storm to a Category 5 an unprecedented event for an Atlantic storm. Wilma later struck the Yucatán and South Florida. It caused 52 deaths and about $26.5 billion in damage.

That pressure reading is still the Atlantic record.

2013: The Sidemen get their start

Not every history lesson involves a disaster. The British YouTube group the Sidemen date their beginning to October 19, 2013, when a crew formed in Grand Theft Auto Online.

According to a fan wiki, it started as a gaming crew. Today it is a full-blown media brand. Proof that group chats can build empires.

Here’s the thing about October 19 birthdays and history

October 19 shows how fast things can change. A market lost nearly a quarter of its value in a day. A storm exploded in strength. A gaming crew turned into a YouTube giant.

Meanwhile, Ferguson built her career one role at a time. So happy birthday to everyone celebrating today. May your day be calmer than Black Monday, and may your biggest drop be the one in the candle wax.
