Did Vance Just Leave Room for Guilfoyle by Saying ‘If’ on Access?

JD Vance says anyone selling White House access should suffer consequences, but his careful 'if' left the Guilfoyle question open.

Vice President JD Vance has a word for anyone selling access to the White House: “disgusting and despicable.” He said it at a pointed moment, and in a very careful way. The Vance selling access remarks are already driving a midterm-season debate.

Vance spoke Thursday at a CBS town hall in Michigan hosted by “CBS Evening News” anchor Tony Dokoupil. The hour-long event was set to air Saturday at 8 p.m. ET on CBS and Paramount+, according to CBS News. That puts it less than three weeks before the midterm elections.

What Vance said about selling White House access

Dokoupil pressed him on two storylines: reports about Trump’s crypto earnings and the ouster of Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle. Vance did not dodge the principle. “First of all, if somebody’s selling access to the White House, that’s disgusting and despicable and they should suffer consequences,” he said.

Now look at the “if.” Vance’s phrasing was conditional. He did not say Guilfoyle sold access, and he did not name any action against her. Instead, he said he wants to judge the facts “and not based on a random news media report that I read.”

The Guilfoyle allegation behind the Vance access remarks

Here is the background, with the caveat it needs. Yahoo News reports, citing the Wall Street Journal, that Guilfoyle asked a man seeking help from the administration to wire her $100,000. The man is Deters, a former Kentucky gubernatorial candidate. Deters confirmed the payment request to CBS News, per Yahoo.

Guilfoyle denies the allegation. Her lawyers say the money was owed for public appearances and speaking engagements before her nomination. Meanwhile, IBTimes UK reports that the White House confirmed it asked her to step down. Even so, the allegation itself remains unproven.

The day after she left, Secretary of State Marco Rubio sent State Department employees a message reminding them to avoid conflicts of interest, Yahoo reports. Vance has been in the news on other fronts, too, including his move against Microsoft in the green card suspension fight over H-1B use.

Here’s the thing

This is a midterm story as much as an ethics story. Democrats have pledged oversight investigations and subpoenas if they win control of Congress. Asked whether he would honor those subpoenas, Vance said, “Of course. Of course I will,” and added that “we follow the law,” per the CBS video transcript. The midterm stakes also reach conservative politics more broadly, as our look at the first major electoral test since Charlie Kirk’s assassination shows.

That is a notable promise from a vice president. It is also an easy one to make in October. Yahoo also reports that Trump’s financial disclosures show more than $1 billion in crypto earnings, a figure we could not confirm in a primary document. Dokoupil raised the topic, and the administration’s answer on that front is still pending.

So who decides what counts as Vance selling access to the White House as a charge? A $100,000 wire request is the easy case. A president’s crypto business is the harder one, and Vance’s “if” leaves plenty of room between them.

The town hall also covered gas prices, immigration rhetoric and the war. On his rhetoric, Vance said, “to the extent that my rhetoric has been imperfect here, that’s on me,” Fox News reports.

The real test comes after November 3. If Democrats win the House or Senate, we will find out quickly how “of course I will” holds up against a subpoena.
