Honda Skips Tokyo and Detroit, Picks India to Debut Its New ‘Alpha’ Electric SUV

Honda named its first made-in-India EV the Alpha and set a December 2 global debut in India, with a new H logo.

Honda is launching its first global electric SUV in India on December 2, 2026. The Honda Alpha electric SUV will make its global premiere there, according to Motorbeam’s report on the announcement from Honda Cars India.

It’s the first made-in-India electric SUV Honda has named, and Honda picked India over Tokyo or Detroit. That choice tells you where the company thinks the next big EV fight is. Honda also plans 10 new models in India by 2030, seven of them SUVs, Rushlane reports. The Alpha is the first one out of the gate.

What the Honda Alpha Electric SUV Means for Honda

The stakes are real, so this new Honda electric SUV carries heavy pressure to deliver.

Honda says the name comes from the first letter of the Greek alphabet. In other words, it signals a new beginning for customers, CarWale reports. Honda also says India will be the first market to get the car.

Honda will build the Alpha at its Tapukara plant in Rajasthan. Meanwhile, the company expects that plant to serve as the global production base, according to Motoroids. Honda hasn’t said whether that means exports to other markets, so don’t read too much into that yet.

The Alpha also comes from the “0 Alpha” concept Honda showed at the Japan Mobility Show in 2025, just-auto reports. So this isn’t a throwaway badge on an old platform.

A New Logo Rides Along

The Alpha will be the first Honda in India to wear the redesigned “H” emblem. Honda is rolling it out across its car business. The old car-division logo dates back to 1963, just-auto notes. That’s a long run for a badge.

“Honda Alpha represents our ambition to bring advanced electric mobility to our customers in India while delivering the quality, reliability and joy of driving that Honda is known for.”

That’s Toshiyuki Yanagisawa, president and CEO of Honda Cars India, as quoted by just-auto. The excerpt cuts off there, so the full sentence may run longer. Either way, the pitch for Honda’s Alpha electric crossover is clear: quality first, flash second.

The Crowded Field Honda’s Alpha Electric Crossover Faces

Here’s the thing: if you’re shopping for an electric SUV in India, this is not an empty parking lot. Electrive says the Alpha is similar in size and positioning to Honda’s global HR-V. It lists the Hyundai Creta Electric, Mahindra BE 6, Tata Sierra.ev, Maruti Suzuki e Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella as its rivals in India.

That is a lot of electric SUVs fighting over the same buyers. Crowded fields rarely forgive late arrivals, and the losers end up splitting what’s left. Honda wants to avoid being one of those slivers in India.

What We Still Don’t Know About the Honda Alpha EV

Plenty. Honda hasn’t released official battery, range or motor figures. Pricing and a retail launch date aren’t out either. Team-BHP says Honda is expected to reveal specs and the production timeline at the December event.

Honda hasn’t said whether the Alpha will ever reach the US, and none of the reports we checked mention American availability. Electrive reads the name as effectively scrapping the “0 Series” branding, but that’s the outlet’s interpretation, not a Honda statement.

Honda has the name, the logo and the factory. On December 2, it has to show the numbers. A name that means “first” had better come with a car that sells.
