Trump Hands Out Candy at the White House, and the Treasury Slips In a Savings Pitch

Trump and Melania handed out candy to military and foster families, and Treasury slipped in coloring books pitching Trump Accounts.

Even the candy line came with a policy pitch. The White House Halloween event on the South Lawn on Thursday was billed as a gathering for thousands of kids and parents, where President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump handed out candy to the children of military, law enforcement and foster families. Meanwhile, the Treasury Department slipped in coloring books promoting “Trump Accounts.”

What happened at the White House trick-or-treat

The Trumps greeted families on the South Drive, according to reporting from The Washington Times. They posed for photos with many children. They also chatted with some families for up to a minute, and the president shook kids’ hands. The Times said the candy appeared to be chocolate bars. The White House calls them “commemorative candies.”

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller were first in line with their children. Trade Representative Jamison Greer was also spotted with a child. The Air Force Strolling Strings played spooky and modern tunes, including “The Imperial March.” Yes, that one. It made for a very on-brand soundtrack for a lawn full of tiny Darth Vaders.

The First Lady’s office runs the event, as it does the Easter Egg Roll and Christmas events. In its Oct. 26 announcement, the White House said it would run from 3:30 to 7 p.m. Some local outlets, however, reported a 7:30 p.m. end. It landed two days before Halloween itself, which falls on Saturday.

Why the Trump Accounts coloring books matter

Here’s the thing most photo galleries will skip. The Treasury handed out coloring books promoting Trump Accounts, which The Washington Times describes as new tax-advantaged savings accounts for children. In effect, a family event doubled as a quiet advertisement for a new federal savings program aimed squarely at kids.

For parents, that is the part worth a second look. If you have children, the program will probably reach your mailbox, your workplace benefits or your kid’s school soon enough. Read the details before you sign anything, because a cheerful cartoon is not a fee schedule. Washington’s pitch-first, details-later habit is nothing new, as our look at how federal programs invite fraud and crackdowns shows.

The U.S. Postal Service ran a “BE BEST” postcard station, a nod to the First Lady’s child-wellbeing and online-safety initiative. It also brought toy mail trucks. Other participants included the International Fresh Produce Association with Michigan apples and the National Confectioners Association. America 250, NASA, the National Park Service, the U.S. Mint, the Secret Service and the Center of Science and Industry, which brought science kits, rounded out the list.

Who got into the Trump Halloween party, and who didn’t

This was not a public party. Per the White House, tickets went to military families, law enforcement families, foster and adoptive families, and administration officials with children. Agency channels set the guest list, so there was no lottery to enter. The White House said thousands of children and parents would attend. So far, though, it has released no post-event crowd count.

Last year’s version was similar. Trump had returned hours earlier from a multi-day Asia trip. According to CBS News, he spent just under an hour handing out full-size chocolate bars. He also went viral for balancing candy on children’s heads, repeating a moment from the 2019 party in 2025.

What happens next after South Lawn Halloween

Nothing more is scheduled on the White House Halloween event front, and our search turned up no other Halloween events. The next big family event on the calendar is typically the Christmas season. The White House has not announced 2026 dates, though.

Trump Accounts are the story to watch. The coloring books were a friendly way in. The real questions are who qualifies, how much goes in and what it costs families.

Kids will eat the candy by Friday. A savings account lasts decades.
