For generations, his calm voice sat at the center of our screens. When Patrick Stewart dies at 86, the world loses the British actor who gave us Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Professor Charles Xavier.
His family announced Thursday that Sir Patrick died Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles.
What the family says about Patrick Stewart’s death
Stewart’s spokesperson, Kelly Bush Novak, shared the statement. It says he died “in the loving care of his beloved wife Sunny, following a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia,” according to UNILAD.
His wife, singer-songwriter Sunny Ozell, was with him, along with family and friends, according to LADbible. They married in 2013. He leaves two children.
Novak said the family will “forever cherish the peaceful ease and reflection on his face, an enduring reminder of his invincible grace,” per a repost of the Hollywood Reporter story. No outlet has reported a more specific cause of death or a diagnosis date. The family statement is the only thing confirmed so far.
From Yorkshire stage to starship bridge
Stewart was born July 13, 1940, in Mirfield, West Yorkshire. He began acting in 1959 and joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1966, where he stayed until 1982, according to ComicBook.com.
American audiences barely knew him then, and casting a Shakespearean stage veteran in a sci-fi series was a gamble. That gamble became Picard in “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” which ran seven seasons from 1987 to 1994. He then played the captain in four feature films and came back for “Star Trek: Picard,” which ended in 2023, BNO News reports.
He then gave a second franchise the same steady presence. He played Professor Xavier from the first “X-Men” film in 2000, returning in “Logan” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” Other credits include “Dune,” and he even voiced a CIA deputy director on “American Dad!”
The family’s statement also calls him a Knight, a Chancellor, a motor sport enthusiast and a lifelong Huddersfield football fan. It is a full life, and it began with a kid from Yorkshire.
Why the death of Patrick Stewart matters for your family
Here’s the thing: the family chose to name the disease, and that matters. Alzheimer’s and Lewy body dementia touch millions of American households, and many families go through them quietly. When Patrick Stewart dies and his family speaks openly about the cause, it can help others feel able to talk too.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the Johns Hopkins Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center Fund and the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America Caregiver Resources, per ComicBook.com. If you have ever cared for someone with dementia, that second one was made with you in mind.
What happens after Patrick Stewart has died
The family has announced no memorial or funeral plans. We also have no official statements yet from Paramount, Marvel or Disney, or from his co-stars.
One open question is Marvel. BNO News reports Stewart was set to appear again as Xavier in “Avengers: Doomsday,” scheduled for Dec. 18. That report comes from a single outlet, and no studio has said how it will handle the role. Many fans will be asking soon.

The statement closes with a line from his memoir about Picard. It fits. For decades, a man who played a captain made us believe that leadership could be thoughtful, kind and quietly stubborn.
